To the person who mentioned HP, J.K. Rowling was behind having her books made into the movies, but was not behind them. She was extremely hands off the entire affair, the only request she made was to put Kreacher in, because they wanted to remove him.
You’re right about that! Yea she did technically oversee the script to make sure there were no contradictions for future books, but I think a lot of it had to do with her crazy schedule. They FINALLY made her a producer in Deathly Hallows and I think that’s why Part 1 was so fantastic in relation to the books in comparison to the other movies.
That’s the last question I’ll post concerning the JK Rowling thing as this is a Hunger Games blog!
I just really wish that they wouldn't screw up the movie.
I really don’t think they will. It’s like the first time a book adaptation movie really has the author behind it.
Do you live under a rock??? JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, was behind all the movies. It's not the first time a book adaptation movie has the author behind it.
Well what an outlandish statement I just made! I forgot to add “aside from HP”. I got distracted and hit the publish button. I’m talking about everything else ASIDE from the HP series (although there are a few issues I have with the movies). Suzanne’s involvement reminds me of JK’s involvement when Sorcerer’s Stone was in preproduction. Which is a good thing. However, surely Suzanne Collins will have far more time to dedicate to the film than JK Rowling did, which is why I’m confident nothing too bad will happen as far as changes go.
I mean thank god that Jennifer Lawrence is such a good actor first of all. But also, Hair dye and makeup will undoubtedly make her the perfect Mockingjay. Sure she's older than the ideal Katniss but if anyone has seen Winter's Bone, it's obvious she'll do a great job
At first I was like AWWWWW cause I really wanted Hailee Steinfeld. I really wanted her to be Katniss. Then they released the interview with Gary Ross answering all the questions I had about why they chose her and the press release with Suzanne Collins saying she never thought they find someone so close to the Katniss she had in her head. That turned everything around for me.
The minute I read those articles I went into absolute acceptance and soon after that, excitement. I wanted someone with OUTSTANDING acting chops, and the kind of actor that goes above and beyond for their role. Almost obsessive. After reading up on Jennifer’s bio, I found that this is precisely the kind of actor she is. But MOST IMPORTANTLY, Suzanne Collins never thought she’d find someone as close to Katniss as Jennifer Lawrence was. That was enough for me. She is the creator, the visionary, the author. This is her baby, and if she feels that Jennifer Lawrence is “the perfect realization of the character who is in her head”, then fuck there is no way any of us can complain. You really can’t ask for more than that. We as a fandom are so fucking lucky we have an author who is extremely involved in the movie making process.
Jennifer Lawrence is a great actress but she is not "olive-skinned" the way Katniss is supposed to be, and as some one who is that annoys me... God forbid you have a lead actress that isn't a blond-haired blue-eyed wasp.
“I couldn’t be happier about being a part of “Hunger Games” and to play Katniss. I have a huge responsibility to the fans of this incredible book and I don’t take it lightly. I will give everything I have to these movies and to this role to make it worthy of Suzanne Collins’ masterpiece.”—Jennifer Lawrence, on being chosen to play Katniss (via TheHobOrg)
Who do you think should play as Katniss Everdeen?
I wanted Kaya or maybe Victoria Justice. They have the hair for Katniss.
I hate that Lawrence girl or whatever her name was.
I wanted an unknown. or at least I wanted them to attempt to LOOK for one, which they chose not to do. After that I wanted Hailee Steinfeld, but now I’m actually really down with Jennifer Lawrence. Collins said she needed someone MATURE to play Katniss, and that I totally get. That was my moment of “oOOoOoooh”. Plus she really is more than what Collins ever expected they would find. If she’s okay by the author, it’s okay with me. Jennifer Lawrence is one of those actors who will do ANYTHING to prepare to the role. Those are the people obsessed with their art. That’s the kind of person we need because realistically Katniss is probably one of the biggest female roles ever.
While I do have some problem with Jennifer Lawrence's age, I accept that generally Hollywood casts older actors to play teenagers and that they can make her look younger with makeup, etc, that's not my main problem.
What I think a lot of people (especially casting agents and people who are saying "they can just dye her hair! she'll look like Katniss!") are missing is that it's not about dyeing her hair or making her get a tan so she looks more "olive-skinned."
It's about the fact that they very blatantly sent out a casting call to white-actors only, while purposefully excluding POC (people of colour) who may also fall under the "olive-skin" category. By deliberately not including them in casting, it just goes along with the white-washing that is all throughout Hollywood (like what they did with The Last Airbender). That is my problem with Jennifer Lawrence. It's not that I don't think she's capable (she is). It's that, as always in Hollywood, a white actor was chosen and an actor of colour was not even given the chance, though they could have easily fit the role physically.
absolutely!! I hate that the studios just blatantly ignored the whole skin color thing.
''I don’t think it will be so outrageous whatever changes they make since Suzanne Collins is so involved with the process''
Me either, it just upset me that Jennifer Lawrence actually got the rol; in other words it upset me that Ella Purnell didn't even cast for it eves if she was my best option xD
Believe me, when i wirte a book and they want to make it movie i tell i can choose my cast e_é
Anyways. DO WATHEVER YOU WANT HOLLYWOOD, FUCK YEAH YOU'LL BE MILIONAIRES WITH THIS AMAZING MOVIE <3 *-* Beacause is the best right? RIGHT?
PS: Go Jennifer Lawrence <3
honestly, I can't see jennifer as Katniss (appereance, age, type of body) And I'm not sure makeup can fix everything.
But, when I saw Winters bone trailer, read the articles that She's really that good to be katniss, and watch her interview in Jimmy kimmel live. I've changed my mind. She's still not katniss(I'd rather they pick unknown), but now I understand why they pick her. She's not only a great actress from what we all knew, but she's also soo genuine, sweet, and down to earth. Now I can't wait to see how they change her to looklike katniss. makeup, dyed her hair, and lost some weight-- She can be katniss
My thoughts on JL as Katniss;
Personally, she wasn't my first choice. I kinda wanted someone who wasn't already famous. However, if Suzanne Collins says she is perfect, then thats what matters. She created her. The more I know about her, the more she grows on me.
Yea I really wanted an unknown! But I’m glad we have someone whose acting is up to par.
My two cents on Jen Lawrence: I think this is just like the Robert Pattinson fiasco. Everyone thought he'd be a sucky Edward and they all ate their words when he was actually okay. Not that I'm comparing Twilight with THG (because I think THG is a billion times better). Not that I love Jennifer as Katniss, I just think everyone is going to end up loving her. Just my humble opinion :)
I think in the end everyone will be pleased with her
Hey, let's see the bright side: being Jennifer in her 20s, the actor who will play Peeta will also be around that age, we can fangirl to our hearts content!! 8D
Ok, now to the point. I really don't mind her playing Katniss, as much as I would have chosen someone younger (I was cheering for Hailee), I'll go with the director's words when he says that they "need someone of a certain maturity and power to be Katniss". And he's right. I don't think someone younger, no matter how good actress she might be, can pull the mature side of Katniss as good as someone with more experience. Jennifer Lawrence is a good actress, makeup can make wonders and she has the director AND Suzanne's approval. Works for me, I'll just wait for the movie and see how it comes out.
Everything you just said :) I think that article completely changed my perspective about her as Katniss and in a good way.
I wasn't very thrilled when the rumors went out that Jennifer Lawrence was going to be cast. I wanted them to cast younger since I feel that the fact that it is kids fighting it out to the death is a major and important part of the book that needed to be reflected in the movies. However, after reading the article that Lionsgate put out announcing the casting, watching a bit of Winters Bone and hearing that she has Suzanne Collins' full support I will reserve judgement until I see a trailer or something. Impress me Jennifer Lawrence, impress me.
I can’t wait. Gary Ross said she’ll be doing archery training as well as tree climbing. That really got me excited! I am very interested to see what she does with it.
hi! i love your blog and i just wanted to say that i wish people would stop complaining about Jennifer's age. i mean does any actor usually play their age? so many actors in their 20s are always playing high school students, you see that in movies and tv shows. i still wish they would've picked Kaya for Katniss but i think Jennifer will do great as Katniss! she's an amazing actress. plus now that they've cast Jennifer maybe Hunter Parrish will get cast as Peeta. I read in an interview where Hunter said if Jennifer got cast to sign him up for the role :)
My concern was that she would be older in the later movies, not so much this one. However Suzanne Collins is okay with her age, and if she’s cool with it, then so am I :D
I think most fans don't like Jennifer because they don't see Katniss in her. To be honest, I don't either. But why don't we give her a chance first before judging or getting upset for this is like a disappointed? She's an Oscar nominee after all (though I haven't seen her act yet).
What I want to know is if THG will become some kind of overrated now that they chose JL for the lead? Maybe it's just me, but I've been hoping that the movies or the first one at least will be, like, a dark horse. Am I making any sense? Gosh, I don't know. Anyway, I don't want to compare and I am not, but there's always a part of me that wants this to be like Twilight. Not in the sense that most fans who don't like Twilight are thinking. It's just that I like what Twilight did with the casting; with them getting unknown actors. Well, isn't it nice to have something you like that people ignore to be like something big because it's amazing? For them to see that it's just not another young adult series turned into movies?
I'm not making any sense, am I? Maybe I just really want unknown actors to give lives to the characters we love. Okay, I've said too much. Time to shut up.
can we chill about the age issue, please? dawson casting, guys. it's a thing. kids almost never play kids. see a movie, a broadway show, a tv show where the main character's 12? the actor's at least 15 or 16. character is 16? then you've gotta know the actor playing her is at least 20. it's how it /goes/, cupcakes.
I like this answer. The age issue was the only thing that bothered me, but it’s true. 16 year old in Hollywood is always early 20s looking. It’s weird but that’s how it is.
This article really put me at ease. Answered all the questions I had about how they dealt with the age, race issue, ect.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: When did you know Jennifer Lawrence was your Katniss?GARY ROSS: First I saw Winter’s Bone, and I just thought she was phenomenally talented and just kind of riveting and amazing and had so much power. And then we had a meeting and I found her to be just a completely compelling, intelligent person. But then she came in and read for me and it just knocked me out. I don’t want to go into too many details, but we did a scene from the movie and it was so amazingly powerful that it was sort of stunning. You glimpsed every aspect of the role and the potential of the whole movie.
There’s already quite a bit of hand-wringing that, no matter how good an actress Lawrence is, at 20 she’s simply too old for the role.First of all I talked to Suzanne extensively about this. Suzanne saw every single audition. And not only did Suzanne not have an issue with Jen’s age, she felt you need someone of a certain maturity and power to be Katniss. This is a girl who needs to incite a revolution. We can’t have an insubstantial person play her, and we can’t have someone who’s too young to play this. Suzanne was incredibly adamant about this. Far from being too old, she was very concerned that we would cast someone who was too young. In Suzanne’s mind, and in mine, Katniss is not a young girl. It’s important for her to be a young woman. She’s a maternal figure in her family. She’s had to take care of Prim and in many ways her mother since her father’s death. She’s had to grow up pretty quick.
Was the opportunity to side step any child labor laws an added bonus? That’s not the reason. I absolutely cast the right person for the role and in my view there wasn’t even a question who the best Katniss was. It was the easiest casting decision I ever made in my life.
In the books, Katniss is described as being olive-skinned, dark-haired, possibly biracial. Did you discuss with Suzanne the implications of casting a blonde, caucasian girl?Suzanne and I talked about that as well. There are certain things that are very clear in the book. Rue is African-American. Thresh is African-American. Suzanne had no issues with Jen playing the role. And she thought there was a tremendous amount of flexibility. It wasn’t doctrine to her. Jen will have dark hair in the role, but that’s something movies can easily achieve. [Laughs] I promise all the avid fans of The Hunger Games that we can easily deal with Jennifer’s hair color.
How will this inform the rest of your casting, in terms of age, look, everything? Now that we have Katniss, we see who feels good with her both as Peeta and Gale and the rest of her family.
Have actors already started reading with her?No, but we’ve read a lot of people for a lot of roles. Obviously we have to make sure that the cast balances and makes sense. We’re very close. I have very, very good ideas about who I want in a lot of other roles. So I think there’ll be a lot of stuff coming pretty quickly.
Have you had conversations with her about the enormity of stepping not just into a franchise like this, but a character that is already so beloved by the world? How do you prepare a young person for that?Oh god, have you ever met her? [Laughs] Don’t worry about Jen Lawrence. She’s a very powerful person. Jennifer is from Kentucky. I think she feels such a complete connection to who Katniss is, the way many people do, but this just seems like a very good fit to her. I think she’s very confident about the role, I think it feels very organic to her. She’s ready to dive in. She goes to archery class next week. Yeah, she’s going to start shooting arrows next week! I think by the end of the week she’s going to be learning to climb trees. She’s a very strong, confident young woman. She’s very confident in her own talent and who she is as a woman, and I think that all these things make her want to dive into the role.
Will you indulge in the blogs and message boards over the next few days to gauge fan reaction to the casting news?I think one of the wonderful things about The Hunger Games is that everyone has such a personal relationship to the material that they feel they have a very specific idea about the character and who the character is. And that’s wonderful. And I think a lot of the debate that has gone on about who Katniss is is fantastic, because people feel very passionately that their take on the character is unique and correct. But the one that I’ve honestly listened to the most has been Suzanne, who conjured this girl out of her own imagination. To Suzanne, Jen is the perfect realization of the character who is in her head.
I think Jennifer is an outstanding actress and will most likely make a fantastic Katniss. That said, I do feel that she's too old; at 20, Jennifer looks 24 half of the time, and there's just no way she could pass for a 16 year old. Since she's been cast as Katniss, I think they should make Katniss 18 instead. That would be more believable.
I don't think Jennifer is good enough for the role, i mean she is probably a great actress but she doesn't fit in in the role of Katniss, and i don't mean the hair because that is just a little part and it can be fixed. Is just.... when i tought about Katniss i imagine a Ella Purnel, an Hailee Stainfield even sometimes like a Camilla Belle or a Kaya Scodelario... but i really can't stand that Jennifer got the role, i hope she does great and good for her but is just... Not my Katniss & i hope they dont make shit with a great book like did with twilight.
I don’t think it will be so outrageous whatever changes they make since Suzanne Collins is so involved with the process.
People need to accept that the casting will not be perfect and not everyone will get who they want.
Personally, I think she can pull it off, if Suzanne says she's good, then she must have done something right, I think she's always been true to her books and her characters, and her opinion and praise means something.
,From what I've heard she's a good actress, looks can be altered, the important part is whther she can do the character justice.
Suzanne says yes, for now she has my full support.
The minute I read the quote about Collins saying she was more than what they thought they would find, that was my moment of acceptance. Plus academy award nominee. I think it will turn out great.
Author Suzanne Collins weighed in on the selection of Lawrence, “Jennifer’s just an incredible actress. So powerful, vulnerable, beautiful, unforgiving and brave. I never thought we’d find somebody this perfect for the role. And I can’t wait for everyone to see her play it.”
I heard its official that Jennifer lawrence get the katniss role...
I was like, please I really hope its just a humour. She's nothing like katniss, damn it :((((
It hasn’t been confirmed yet, but she might end up being Katniss. It’s starting to look that way. I just really don’t like the fact that when mockingjay comes around we’ll have a 25-26 year old playing someone who is supposed to be 18.
