[Suzanne] Collins says that her father came back from Vietnam with ‘nightmares… that lasted his whole life.’ As a child, she says she sometimes woke up hearing him crying out during his bad dreams.
Collins believes that educating her readers about the realities of war is important. ‘If we wait too long, what kind of expectation can we have?’ she says. ‘We think we’re sheltering them, but what we’re doing is putting them at a disadvantage.
‘I don’t write about adolescence,’ she adds. ‘I write about war. For adolescents.’
